Leakey ISD School Board Recognizes January Students of the Month

Three outstanding Leakey ISD students were recently selected by the Leakey ISD faculty to receive the prestigious honor of being named one of the Students of the Month for January! The honored students are: Hailey Spaniel, Chase Reagor and Bettye Reed. We are very proud of these students and want you to know more about them! Here is what our teachers wrote about these outstanding students!

Hailey Spaniel- Hailey is the daughter of Mark and Terri Spaniel. She is one of eighteen first graders in Ms. Gonzalez’ first grade class. Hailey is a member of a large family; she has four brothers and three sisters! Hailey stays very active as she enjoys gymnastics and jumping on a trampoline at home. She is quite a little athlete and especially likes ice-skating and jumping rope. When Hailey grows up, she is considering being either a teacher or nurse. Hailey has become a very good reader this year and really enjoys the Fancy Nancy book series. On the weekends, Hailey likes to play “hide and seek” and she especially likes going to Wal-Mart to get a pedicure! The beach is where you might find Hailey while on vacation, or possibly Schlitterbahn, as she truly enjoys being in the water. Her favorite color is purple and she loves eating strawberries. Her teacher reports that she is a joy to have in class as she is full of life and energy!

Chase Reagor- This outstanding young man is the son of Charlie and Anissa Reagor. Chase is eleven years old and is currently a sixth grader and junior high student at Leakey ISD. Chase has a twin sister, Emily and an older sister, Sarah, who is an eighth grader at Leakey ISD. While Chase enjoys all kinds of sports, and recently participated on the Leakey Eagle junior high football team, his favorite sport to play is baseball. Besides being an athlete, Chase is a scholar as well, as his name regularly appears on the Honor Roll! His favorite subject is writing and he is quite an accomplished writer. When not studying or participating in athletics, Chase enjoys playing with his many cousins and watching Sponge-Bob Square-pants on television. His favorite color is green and his favorite place to eat is Fuddruckers. Chase plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin after graduating from Leakey High School. At the present time Chase is undecided about what he wants to study at UT or what career he will pursue. We are confident that Chase will excel in whatever career path he chooses!

Bettye Reed-This energetic young lady is the daughter of Roy and Yam Jon Reed. She is sixteen years old and a junior in high school. This is the second year that Bettye has attended Leakey High School as she previously attended a much larger school in the Houston area! Bettye reports that downsizing has been a huge adjustment but she enjoys attending a much smaller school where she can be involved in many different activities! Bettye plays the flute in the Leakey Eagle Marching Band and is also a member of the Flag Corps. She is also a cheerleader and studies ballet at the Canyon School of Dance. Bettye also finds time in her busy schedule to work part-time at Mama Chole’s Restaurant. Bettye’s positive attitude makes her a fine addition to the student body at Leakey High School. After graduating from high school, Bettye plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin. She plans to major in marine biology and wants to pursue a career as a marine biologist!

These three students were honored at a regular School Board meeting held on the evening of January 18th, 2010. Criteria considered by the faculty in selecting students for this award include: deportment, citizenship, attitude, work habits, friendliness, participation in extra-curricular activities, and academic performance. In addition to an attractive framed certificate, each student received a $25.00 gift certificate to either Mama Chole’s Restaurant, Frio Canyon Lodge Restaurant, or the Bent Rim Grill at the Motorcycle Stop.
