LEAKEY ISD CONDUCTS FOURTH ANNUAL SCIENCE FAIR ON JANUARY 7th

Eighteen Leakey ISD students in grades 6-12 recently participated in a Science and Engineering Fair held on the Leakey ISD campus. Student projects were displayed on tables set up on the floor of the school gymnasium. The judging was conducted on Thursday, January 7th, soon after the students arrived back on campus after the Christmas and New Years holiday! Beth Manglberger, Leakey ISD science teacher and Fair Director, reported that the students started their scientific investigations shortly after the fair was announced on September 1st, 2009.

The Leakey ISD Science and Engineering Fair was developed based on the guidelines of the Alamo Regional Academy of Science and Engineering (ARASE). The ARASE covers twenty-nine counties in and around Bexar County with over seven hundred secondary student participants whose schools are conducting science fairs similar to and concurrent with the Leakey ISD science fair! The ARASE mission is to advance public understanding and appreciation of science, especially among young people.

While Mrs. Manglberger was the Fair Director, she was ably assisted by Leakey ISD biology teacher, Barbara Clark and chemistry teacher, Brandon Powers. Two community members and two college students, who participated in Geo-Force while in high school, agreed to serve as judges for the competition. The judges were: Joel Pigg, Andy Beard, Hilary Prado, and Rosy Arellano. The judging began at 8:30 a.m. on January 7th and the judges interviewed each contestant starting at 10:00 a.m. Leakey ISD wants to publicly express appreciation to each of the judges who spent most of the morning engaged in the judging and evaluation of the projects. By noon the judges had completed their difficult work and informed Mrs. Manglberger of the results.

The participants, their families, and all Leakey ISD students, assembled in the Lloyd Buttler gymnasium at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 7th, to await the announcement of the winners and the presentation of medals and ribbons. Eleven students were selected by the judges as Regional Qualifiers and will advance to the ARASE fair that will be held in the Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio Texas. This regional science fair will be conducted from Monday, March 8th through Wednesday, March 10th, 2010.

Dimitri Perez and Robert Woodruff, teamed up to place 1st in the junior high competition by submitting a project entitled: “Bubbles”; Nicole Clark and Sara Breshears placed 1st in the high school division with their joint project entitled: “Effect of Acid on Art”. Ethan Blackman placed 1st in the individual competition in the junior high division with his project entitled: “Shrimp Disaster”. Garet Martin placed 2nd in this division with his project entitled: “Vertical Decent”.

In the high school Pre-AP biology individual competition, Keena Auld placed 1st with her project entitled: “Why is Your Child Picky?” Kayla Vincent placed second with her project entitled: “Reaction Time”. Olivia Martinez placed 3rd with her project entitled, “Why Does Hair Frizz in Humidity?” Drew Shackelford received an “Honorable Mention” for his project entitled “Conducting Electricity” and Miranda Richter received an “Honorable Mention” for her project entitled “Lurking in a Locker Room”. Other students who had projects in this division included: Tanner Pannell; “Artificial Light vs. Sunlight”, Emilio Navarro, “Alternative Wind Energy”, Caleb Thomasson, “Will Soft Drinks Damage Animal Tissue?” and rounding out this division was Andrew Smith with his project entitled “Homemade Cryo-Fluid”

In the high school Scientific Exploration division Kati Young placed 1st with her project entitled; “Caution-Confusion Ahead”. Joslyn Kindt placed 2nd in this division with her project entitled; “Catalicious” and Josh Haby placed 3rd in this division with his project entitled; “Plant-tastics”.

Eleven of the eighteen participants were selected as Regional Qualifiers and ten of those students are pictured above. They include: (first row, left to right); Ethan Blackman, Robert Woodruff, and Dimitri Perez. (second row, left to right); Keena Auld, Kayla Vincent, Josh Haby, Sara Breshears, Katie Young, Josilyn Kindt, and Nicole Clark. Olivia Martinez was also selected as a Regional Qualifier but is not pictured.

Leakey ISD is very proud of the work of these aspiring scientists and we will keep the community updated as the participants advance to the regional fair in San Antonio. We also want to express our appreciation to the Fair Director, Beth Manglberger, and to Barbara Clark and Brandon Powers who ably assisted Mrs. Manglberger in conducting the Leakey ISD Science and Engineering Fair for 2010!
