Leakey FFA members are crowned “Sweepstakes Winners” in 2009 District FFA Leadership Development Event Competitions
Leakey – Twelve area schools from Real, Uvalde, and Medina counties participated in the 2009 District Leadership Development Events on November 3rd in Devine—each one vying to be named “Champion” in their respective contest.
Leadership Development Events (LDEs) focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization. Team and individual events are used to reinforce what is taught in agricultural science classrooms.
All LDEs are qualifying events, where the first and second place district teams in each event advance to the area level. Many LDEs are qualifying events for the National FFA LDE competition and/or offer scholarship opportunities.
Teams around the area competed in 12 different FFA LDEs. Leakey entered 11 of the 12 events. The 2009 Revaldina District FFA LDE Leakey team placings include:

Two Sweepstakes awards are given to the chapter with the highest overall winnings, with a multi-teacher department and with a single teacher department. Points are awarded to each team according to their placing. The chapter with the most points in each teacher category is the Sweepstakes winner. Mrs. Jennifer Pigg is the agriculture science teacher in Leakey and the chapters’ advisor. She is extremely proud that the Leakey FFA Chapter is the Sweepstakes Winner for the single teacher department. Coaching 11 teams is a big task to undertake and to do so well with so many is quite an accomplishment. Mrs. Pigg would like to thank everyone who assisted with team practices, preperations, and supplies for this year’s events.
Teams will receive their awards at the District FFA Convention in Hondo on Monday, May 3 at 6:00pm.
