Leakey ISD School Board Recognizes February Students of the Month

Three outstanding Leakey ISD students were recently selected by the Leakey ISD faculty to receive the prestigious honor of being named one of the Students of the Month for February! The honored students are: Skyler Blalock, Leyda Lopez, and Kayla Vincent. We are very proud of these students and want you to know more about them! Here is what our teachers wrote about these outstanding students!

Skyler Blalock- This energetic young man is eight years old and a student in Mrs. Jones’ second grade class. He is the son of Corrina Blalock and Kevin Blalock. Skyler loves to watch 007 movies, play video games, and play with his dog, “Cortana”. He is the only child in his family and consequently gets lots of attention from his parents and grandparents! He wants to be a video game designer when he grows up. Skyler’s favorite subject in school is writing and his favorite food is hamburgers, particularly hamburgers at Burger King! His favorite color is green. Skyler tries hard to do his very best in his school work and is always polite and kind to his friends and teachers. This fine young man will definitely accomplish much in the next ten years as he completes his high school education and graduates from Leakey High School in the year 2020!

Leyda Lopez-This exceptional young lady is a seventh grader and the junior high Student of the Month! Leyda is the daughter of Gerardo and Elizabeth Lopez. Her family moved to Leakey three years ago from Piedras Negras, Mexico. Leyda is very happy to be living in Leakey and especially loves to swim in the Frio River in the summertime! She likes to spend her free time drawing, reading, and writing fiction. Leyda’s teachers selected her for this honor because she is a dedicated, hard-working student. Her sweet smile and positive attitude are appreciated by all who know her. Leyda takes advantage of every opportunity to do her best. She never lets any barrier interfere with her successes and she has worked hard to become fluent in English as her second language. Leyda wants to be an attorney when she grows up but is unsure of where she will attend college.

Kayla Vincent-This amazing young lady is a freshman student at Leakey High School and has been a student in the Leakey ISD for the past six years. She is the daughter of Terrie Vincent. Kayla is a member of the Flag Corps, an integral component of the Leakey Eagle Marching Band. Besides being a very bright young lady, Kayla is also an accomplished athlete. She played on the junior varsity volleyball team last fall and will play golf and participate in track this spring. Her specialty in track is throwing the discus and shot-put. Currently, Kayla is keeping statistics (stats) for the varsity boy’s basketball team and she pitches in and helps as a manager when needed! Kayla is a member of the Leakey 4-H Club and raises and shows rabbits! At the Real County Junior Livestock Show back in January, Kayla showed the reserve grand champion buck rabbit that sold for $1,200.00! When Kayla graduates from Leakey High School in 2013, she plans to attend college and wants to become a radiology technician.

These three students were honored at a regular School Board meeting held on the evening of February 18th, 2010. Criteria considered by the faculty in selecting students for this award include: deportment, citizenship, attitude, work habits, friendliness, participation in extra-curricular activities, and academic performance. In addition to an attractive framed certificate, each student received a $25.00 gift certificate to either, Mama Chole’s Restaurant, Frio Canyon Lodge Restaurant, or the Bent Rim Grill at the Motorcycle Stop.
