Leakey ISD to Honor Local Veterans on Wednesday, November 11th, 2009
All area veterans are cordially invited to attend the Veterans’ Day Program that is annually produced and presented by the students of Leakey Independent School District. This year the ceremony will be held on Wednesday, November 11th. This special event will be conducted in the Lloyd Buttler gymnasium, located on the school campus, starting promptly at 9:45 a.m.
The program will last approximately forty minutes and will feature the presentation of colors, a performance of the national anthem, the recitation of the pledge of allegiance, and the singing of the military anthems by the Leakey High School choir. Also there will be a roll call of all veterans present, the observance of a moment of silence, a performance by the elementary chorus, a patriotic speech given by a guest speaker, the playing of taps, followed by the benediction and finally the retirement of the colors.
There will be a reception for all veterans and spouses prior to the ceremony. All veterans are asked to register in the Leakey ISD Teacher Workroom from 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. so that the roll call roster will be accurate and complete. Refreshments will be provided to the veterans and their guests during this registration time. These refreshments will be provided by members and parents of the Leakey ISD National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) who are also organizing and producing this Veterans’ Day Program. At about 9:40 a.m. the veterans will march to the gymnasium and will take their places of honor on seating set up on the gym floor.
Community members are invited to attend and assist the Leakey Independent School District in honoring our local veterans. There will be ample seating in the bleachers on the East side of the gymnasium for visitors and friends of honored veterans. Please join us in honoring the men and women who have served or are currently serving honorably and heroically in our United States Armed Forces.
NHS and NJHS sponsor Beth Manglberger, along with co-sponsor Karen Kurz, will assist the students in organizing and conducting this special event. Leakey ISD band director, Rick Austin will also be highly involved in this special event as he will be responsible for preparing the students for the musical program. In addition to the Leakey Eagle Band, Mr. Austin will direct the elementary choir composed of students in kindergarten through grade five.
Leakey ISD has been producing this patriotic event for many years. The late Bill Bradley, a beloved and longtime Leakey ISD teacher, was instrumental in getting the first program organized nearly than fifteen years ago! While most of the participating veterans will be Leakey residents, veterans from all over the state have been invited and are expected to attend and participate in the ceremony.
Please join us on the eleventh of November for this patriotic program. Also please assist us in making sure that all veterans in the Frio Canyon area receive a personal invitation to attend and participate in this annual event. We hope to see you on Wednesday, November 11th!
